Background & Motivation
Popbookings is a company offering an event staffing platform that aims to streamline the entire process into a single, user-friendly dashboard. Their platform allows users to efficiently find talent for jobs and seamlessly manage staff for events. Key features include hiring individuals, scheduling management, comprehensive talent database, access to talent information including contact details and photos, GPS check-in for tracking staff, messaging capabilities, direct staff payment, and the convenience of web and mobile app accessibility.
The Problem
Currently, PopBookings is in the process of redesigning their app and is specifically targeting the mobile user interface. Here are the key areas they are addressing:
-
Making adjustments and incorporating new features to enhance the mobile app design layout.
-
Developing a comprehensive Style Guide to guide the app redesign process.
-
Renovating the bookings page and improving the booking process.
These efforts aim to improve the overall user experience and functionality of the app.
My Role
Worked in a team of three UX/Product designers responsible for ideation & design thinking, wireframing, and UI design. This included market research, user research, and company analysis to understand how we can approach the firm’s business objectives. I initiated tasks within my group, taking notes during meetings with the product manager, setting up communication between the design team, sketching initial concepts, designing high-fidelity mockups, and creating a simple prototype for the app.
Solution
Utilize the current company’s resources/data from user research, competitive analysis, and heuristic analysis to design an improved product interface that is aesthetically functional.
Business Goals
-
Make adjustments to the mobile app redesign to add needed features in the layout that don't currently exist
-
Develop a new style guide based on PopBooking's new look
-
Revamp the bookings user flow/process.
User Research and Competitive Analysis
I began familiarizing myself with the project scenario by understanding the problem and defining the objectives the design team will tackle. Our Product manager provided the company context that contained their target audience, brand information, and business goals they would like to accomplish to assist us in understanding their product and users.
Our team started off creating a project plan to help establish a clear roadmap for how we'll approach the design project. This plan allowed us to stay organized and strict with working in a compressed timeline and allowed the team to become proficient at time-boxing the work.
The team analyzed industry competitors, such as BookOut and Trusted Herd, to learn from their approaches and enhance the user experience. We conducted a comprehensive competitive analysis of PopBooking's rivals to understand their event staffing processes and how they promote their products. This analysis served as a foundation for our own approach and guided improvements in the product's design experience
Here is what we found:
-
Registration and onboarding is much more successful for PopBookings than is for the competing apps.
-
Larger tiles for jobs can improve the PopBookings job board, and present
additional features that are currently absent. -
Job details in PopBookings may benefit from organized sections similar to
Trusted Herd. -
Competing added value features that PopBookings can leverage:
-
Sharing interest and disinterest in certain jobs (missing from
BookedOut) -
Present a clear job status at the end of the booking process (Missing
from both BookedOut and Trusted Hed) -
Present a clear application progress (Missing from Trusted Herd)
-
Ideation
After analyzing user research and competitors, we began our design tasks:
-
Create a style guide based on PopBookings improved brand aesthetic
-
Revamp the Booking's process.
-
Update inconsistent UI and add needed features that do not currently exist in the app
Style Guide
When creating a style guide for PopBookings, I had to keep in mind the brand’s image.
Since the majority of the product’s users are female, I wanted my design to support an ease of use and good user experience by using clear colors to distinguish different elements such as title of a screen, iconography, and informative text while maintaining the company’s image. In addition, I implemented recognizable icons and buttons that users can easily identify when interacting with the screen. The overall style guide provides a very straightforward interaction that is familiar to other products or apps.
Sketches
After analyzing the data from PopBooking's previous app design, I utilized the firm's new aesthetic and brand image to create multiple hand-drawn sketches. These sketches served as a foundation for redesigning the job booking page, ensuring clear and seamless user guidance. I conducted tests and made adjustments to the sketches before progressing to higher fidelity versions. To gather quick feedback, I conducted guerrilla usability testing with users.

Redesigned Screens
After analyzing PopBooking's previous app design, our team worked on adjusting the current Figma designs. We utilized the newly established style guide to make necessary modifications and additions, aiming to improve the overall user flow and functionality of the app. These adjustments included changing the appearance of buttons to ensure users can easily identify their functions, incorporating small badges (such as "hot new jobs" or "fast pay") to help users identify specific job types they are searching for, and redesigning the bottom navigation to save screen space and enhance navigation across different pages. Our goal was to give the app a more modern look while maintaining its functionality similar to other apps. Given that the current PopBookings app in the app store lacks an aesthetic, minimal design, and flexibility, our team redesigned the user interface screens to provide clear and seamless user guidance.

Reflection
This was a fantastic learning experience as it marked my first time working with a company, collaborating in a team setting, and effectively communicating. While there is always room for improvement, this work experience allowed me to challenge and enhance my design and interpersonal skills, both of which are highly valued in the industry. The internship was particularly interesting as I joined the project during the midway point of the design process, with previous design teams already having contributed to the product. Our team had the responsibility of ensuring that the platform's overall aesthetics and appearance offered clear and intuitive functionality while appealing to everyday users. To achieve this, we developed style guides, sketched initial designs, and revamped PopBookings' user flow. These efforts significantly improved the overall aesthetics and functionality of the platform.
